Billy Dean “Bill” Haas, 85, formerly of rural LaHarpe, died peacefully at home with family in Yates Center on Tuesday, May 7, 2013.
He was born June 28, 1927, in Lawrence, the son of Charles Woodward and Flora Catherine (Launer) Haas. As a young man he attended Manhattan Christian Bible College in Manhattan. On Aug. 24, 1948, Bill married Irma Faye Watkins and they made their home in the Lawrence area.
He worked for Gambles for approximately 10 years and won several top sales awards. For about five years, he and his wife simultaneously owned and operated H & H New & Used Furniture in Lawrence, and Factory Surplus Furniture & Bedding in Ottawa. He operated a backhoe service in New Mexico for seven years before moving to a farm south of LaHarpe. Mrs. Haas preceded him in death Dec. 8, 2006.
Survivors include four children, son Charles Haas, Yates Center, and daughters Connie Caban, Sarasota, Fla., Colette Moore, Wolfforth, Texas, and Catherine Hunsperger, Yates Center; grandson Jeremiah Cartright, Eureka; two brothers, Lloyd Haas, Augusta, and Floyd Haas, Patton, Mo.; one sister, Thelma Wymore, Johnson City, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers.
Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at RiverTree Christian Church in Iola. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in LaHarpe Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Allen County Hospice and left with Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola.
